A cracked or damaged window doesn’t always mean a full replacement. Sometimes a targeted glass window repair is all it takes — and sometimes repair would be throwing money at a problem that needs a real fix. At Tualatin Valley Glass, we’ve spent nearly 50 years helping Portland homeowners make that call. Here’s how we think about it.

When Glass Window Repair Makes Sense

Repair is the right move when the glass damage is isolated and the frame and seal are still solid:

  • Small chips (under 1 inch) — A resin fill can stabilize the damage and prevent spreading. Works best on single-pane glass.
  • Cracked sash or frame, not glass — If the frame is damaged but the glass is intact, a frame repair or re-glazing may be all you need.
  • Loose glazing putty — On older single-pane windows, the putty that holds the glass can dry and crack. Re-glazing restores the seal without new glass.
  • Hardware issues — Stuck windows, broken locks, or failed balances aren’t glass problems. We repair window hardware too.

When You Need Full Glass Replacement

Some damage can’t be patched:

  • Foggy double-pane windows — Condensation between panes means the IGU seal has failed. The entire insulated glass unit needs replacement.
  • Cracks longer than a few inches — Long cracks will keep spreading, especially with Portland’s temperature swings between day and night.
  • Shattered or spider-webbed glass — Safety issue. We offer same-day emergency board-up and fast replacement turnaround.
  • Failed tempered glass — Tempered glass can’t be repaired. When it fails, it breaks into thousands of small pieces and must be fully replaced.
  • Water damage to the frame — If moisture from failed glass has damaged the frame, you’ll need the glass replaced and possibly frame repair too.

Our Glass Window Repair Process

  1. Free assessment — We’ll look at the glass, frame, seal, and hardware to determine whether repair or replacement is the better investment.
  2. Honest recommendation — If a $50 repair will solve the problem, we’ll say so. We don’t upsell replacements when they’re not needed.
  3. Same-day service when possible — Many single-pane repairs can be done on the spot. IGU replacements typically take 5-7 days for fabrication.
